Background: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is the mainstream of today's health care. CAM can promote the holistic health of the elderly. Aromatherapy, which is one kind of CAM, using the natural, non-toxicessential oil substances to improve one’s own health status, is convenient, cheap, safe, and all feasible therapy. This article describes the application of aromatherapy in pension institutions.
Aromatherapy can improve the well-being and the quality of life of the elderly. Aromatherapy in the promotion of pension institutions need to focus on the core concepts of "body - mind -spirit" "holism" "totality" and "welfare". Aromatherapy for many elderly discomforts has its miraculous, including nausea, dizziness, poor appetite etc. Aromatherapy in the use of pension institutions is mainly for cancer, chronic pain, anxiety, depression, respiratory problems, insomnia, stress-related disorders etc. Aromatherapy can reduce the agitation behavior of dementia, improve sleep, and promote motivation and treatment of one’s behavior and psychological symptoms. Aromatherapy can quickly reduce the anxiety of the elderly. Plants that improve cognitive function are ginkgo or plants containing alkaloids and choline promoters. Commonly used essential oils are sage, lemon balm and rosemary. All kinds of essential oils have their special effects. Essential oils are usually wiped, but the sense of smell can affect people's perception and emotions, so inhalation is also a common way to use. All kinds of essential oils have their special using ways and effects. Some of them will be introduced one by one in this paper.
Hanya lin is currently serving as chairman, Taiwan Long - term Care Association, Taiwan. She works to promote peace and care in Taiwan - hospice care for dignified old age, health promotion and the practice of aging.
She organizes the Taiwan Nursing Union to go deep into the community, to lead volunteers to remote villages and towns accompanied by low income and physical and mental disabilities patients, to help send meals and take a bath and other care services. She also organizes the International Nursing Exchange / Visit. She won the health authority nursing home award. Her innovative planning leadership, organize a hospice care team to every town resulting in planning health promotion programs with effective results. She has publications in Long - term Care and nursing.
